Fall Roof Maintenance Checklist for Central Texas Homeowners

2 min read

As temperatures finally start to ease across Waco, Killeen, Temple, Belton, Round Rock, and the rest of Central Texas, fall is a good window to give your roof some attention. Our region sees its heaviest hail and severe thunderstorm activity in spring, and after a long, hot summer of UV exposure, small issues that started months ago can turn into bigger problems once winter's cooler, wetter weather arrives. A little fall maintenance now can help you avoid emergency repairs later.

Here's a simple checklist Castex Roofing recommends for homeowners across our service area.

1. Look for leftover storm damage.

Even if your roof looked fine right after a spring hailstorm, damage isn't always obvious from the ground. Bruised or cracked shingles, dented metal panels, and granule loss can worsen over time and eventually lead to leaks. Walk your yard and driveway after a windy day and check for granules collecting near downspouts, a common early warning sign.

2. Clean out gutters and downspouts.

Central Texas homes collect plenty of leaves, oak catkins, and wind-blown debris. Clogged gutters can't move water away from your roofline and foundation, which becomes a real problem during fall and winter rains. Clear them out and confirm water flows freely away from the house.

3. Check flashing and seals.

The metal flashing around chimneys, skylights, and roof vents is one of the most common places for small leaks to start. Caulk and sealant can dry out and crack after a summer of intense Texas sun, so it's worth having these areas checked before winter weather sets in.

4. Trim back overhanging branches.

Limbs that hang over your roof can drop debris, trap moisture against shingles, and give squirrels or other critters easy access to your attic. Trimming them back now reduces the risk of both storm damage and slow, hidden moisture problems.

5. Schedule a professional inspection.

A trained eye can catch issues a homeowner might miss, especially on steep or metal roofs. A professional inspection typically takes less than an hour and gives you a clear picture of your roof's condition heading into the colder months, along with a sense of how much life you have left before a replacement is needed.

If you're a homeowner or business owner anywhere in our 24+ community service area, taking an hour this fall to work through this checklist can save you from a much bigger headache in January or February. And if you find something that concerns you, whether it's a handful of cracked shingles or a full section of storm-damaged metal roofing, it's better to address it before winter weather moves in.

Castex Roofing has been serving Central Texas since 2016 as a licensed, insured, and Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, and we're happy to help homeowners tell the difference between routine wear and a real repair need.
